Mandalas
The Uses of Mandalas: Throughout history, mandalas have been used for healing, calming the mind, meditation, childbirth and expressing the source and oneness of life.Calley’s Mandalas and You: Each of Calley’s mandalas was drawn as a meditation in Prismacolor colored pencils on black construction paper. Do try this at home! Or better yet, come to the Fairmont Orchid Hawai’i on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island where Calley teaches the technique exactly as she practices it. Bring your friends. No experience necessary. Mandala is an ancient Sanskrit word that means circle, magic circle, disk, unity and the center of one’s wholeness. Often used as a symbol for the universe, they have been drawn, carved, painted and sculpted throughout all time and place. Every ancient cathedral, church, temple and sacred space you have ever been in was a three dimensional mandala. All were oriented to the four directions or cardinal points plus above, below and center.
In 1975, Calley was introduced to the art of mandala through her fascination with a kaleidoscope. Finding its 8-fold symmetry beautiful and meditative, she took to drawing and painting Mandalas with a passion. For seven years, she painted only Mandalas, primarily of plants and endangered species animals, to develop creativity and inner growth.
During a two-year period, she also made a ‘mandala a day’ as an illustrated journal with writing from the heart. Try it one year! It was amazing. In 1980, Calley did her first mural (7,000 square feet!) and enlisted 12 local NJ artists to join her in painting 15 huge Mandalas on the history of agriculture in the United States.
